This week the students learned strategies for working with rational numbers. When adding rational numbers, if the signs are the same then you add the numbers and keep the same sign. Ex... -3 + -5 = - 8. If the signs are different then you keep the sign of the larger digit then find the difference between the 2 digits. Ex.... -7 + (+9) The 9 is larger so the answer is positive. The difference between 9 and 7 is 2.....so the answer is positive 2. When multiplying and dividing integers....if you have two negatives or 2 positives the answer is positive. Ex... -3 x -4 = 12 -25/-5 = 5 If one is negative and one is positive, then the answer is always negative. Ex... 4 x -5 = -20 30/ -6 = -5.
We will do three quizzes this week and early next week on basic integer calculations. The assignment for this week was pages 60-62 #4-23. (A block only completes 4-17)
